Studies show that education in first aid improves recognition of acute illness, provides quicker treatment, and improves survival rates. Guidelines recommend first aid education is made universally available. First aid courses can delivered online, through instructor classes, or through public health campaigns.

In 2015, the definition of first aid was expanded to include anyone from laypersons to professional healthcare providers in a setting where initial first aid is needed. For any situation that involves a person providing assistance to someone in need, the following should be addressed every time by the rescuer:

For SEVERE Medical Emergencies:
Call 911
or your designated emergency number

Medical Care
  • Check for Scene Safety
  • Identify Yourself and When to Ask for Permission to Provide Care
  • Put on Protective Equipment

Note: A basic tenet of first aid is the delivery of care with minimal or no equipment. However, it is recognized that some first aid providers may have access to commercial tourniquets, glucometers, epinephrine autoinjectors, or oxygen. The use of any equipment mandates training, practice, and, in many cases, regulatory or medical oversight related to the use and maintenance of the equipment.
